From the Archives: What’s Love Got to Do With It

Periodically I’m going to be adding some music to the blog that for whatever reason was never included in an album release.

This is a stripped-down cover of What’s Love Got to Do With It, made famous by Tina Turner in 1984, and winner of several 1985 Grammy Awards.

Obviously, since I didn’t write it, I haven’t been able to include it on albums released with a Creative Commons License.

Let me know what you think.

The basic idea is very good. For me it is not finished yet. I think with the piano offer you many options. Why do not you take more instruments? Bass, cello, drums and accordion, for example? The song has everything he needs. But as it now is, it can not even play on a school.

Thanks for listening, Martin. The album Hymns About Her was a minimalist album, mostly done with voice and piano. This song was considered for that album, but was not included because I decided to release the album under a Creative Commons license. Hence the stripped back version, with just voice and piano.

This is a fantastic cover! I disagree with the other comment. Adding all of those other instruments and you might as well just get Tina Turner to sing it. This reminds me quite a bit of the Diane Birch cover of What is Love (you know, that horrible dance club song that was parodied on Saturday Night Live)… slowing it down and stripping all of the excess takes an overplayed song and gives it new life. I really enjoyed this version!

I’m not music expert but ordinary listener, so… I disagree with Martin poinion as well. This song is great to my ears. If you’ll add some more instruments probably you’ll damage this song. …Your first song I ever heard was “Better Man”. I found it on jamendo website (Polish versinon of this site). Then I thought – he’s worth time of mine. Now I’m hearing others songs from “To Get Home Before Night Comes” album and I keep this word still and I’ll be, I think. I’m sorry for mistakes in writing but you must understand – I’m not the English ;) .

This is great, it’s a lot more mellow and somber than the original.
